The smith grind is a stylish and technical trick that involves grinding on a rail or ledge with your back truck while your front truck hangs off the edge. It’s a popular trick in both street and transition skating. Here’s how to master the smith grind:
Foot Positioning: Position your feet with your back foot on the tail and your front foot near the middle of the board. Your front foot should be angled slightly, ready to pivot into the grind.
Approach: Roll towards the rail or ledge at a comfortable speed. Keep your knees bent and your body relaxed for better control.
Ollie onto the Obstacle: As you get close, perform an ollie to lift your board onto the rail or ledge. Aim to land with your back truck locked onto the obstacle while your front truck hangs off.
Lock in the Grind: Shift your weight slightly back as you land to help lock your back truck into the grind. This helps maintain stability during the trick.
Stay Low and Balanced: Keep your knees bent and your body low to help control the grind. Look down the obstacle to spot your exit.
Exit the Grind: As you approach the end of the rail or ledge, prepare to dismount. Shift your weight forward and perform a slight ollie to roll off the obstacle, landing with your knees bent to absorb the impact.
