How to Shuv-it

The shuvit is a classic trick that showcases your control and style. Once you get it down, you can easily incorporate it into your skating repertoire. Let’s dive into the steps!

1. Set Up Your Stance

  • Foot Placement: Position your back foot on the tail of the board, with your toes hanging off the edge. Place your front foot across the board, around the middle, slightly angled for better scoop control.

2. Get Comfortable with Balance

  • Practice Rolling: Roll around on your board to get comfortable with your balance and stance. Familiarity with your board is crucial for executing the trick smoothly.

3. Wind-Up and Prepare

  • Wind-Up Motion: Slightly twist your shoulders and hips in the opposite direction of the spin. This creates the momentum needed for the scoop.

4. The Scoop

  • Scoop the Tail: As you get ready to execute the trick, push down on the tail with your back foot and scoop it in the direction you want the board to spin (backside or frontside).

5. Jump and Keep It Low

  • Jump Slightly: You don’t need to jump high for a shuvit; just lift your feet slightly off the board as it spins. Keep your knees bent for better control.

  • Stay Over the Board: Keep your body centered above the board to maintain balance during the spin.

6. Spot Your Board

  • Keep Your Eyes on It: Watch the board as it completes the rotation. This will help you judge when to land.

7. Land and Roll Away

  • Land with Your Feet Over the Bolts: As the board finishes spinning, prepare to land by extending your legs and keeping your weight centered.

  • Bend Your Knees: Absorb the impact by landing with your knees slightly bent, and roll away smoothly.

8. Practice, Practice, Practice

  • Repetition is Key: Keep practicing the shuvit on flat ground until you feel comfortable with the motion. As you gain confidence, try it on ramps or transitions.

Bonus Tip:

  • Visualize the Trick: Watching videos of skaters performing shuvits can help you understand the motion and improve your technique.
